AEO

In 2026, more than 40% of B2B research queries are answered by an AI engine — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews — before a user ever clicks a result. If your agency isn't being cited as the source, you don't exist in that research.

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so that generative AI engines can extract, summarize, and cite it as the authoritative answer to a user's question. It builds on classical SEO but optimizes for citation, not click.

The five rules of AEO for agencies

1. Lead with the answer

AI engines extract the first 1–3 sentences after a question heading. Put the direct answer there. Save the context and color for later in the section.

2. Use a question-and-answer FAQ block

Add a structured FAQ at the bottom of every meaningful page, marked up with FAQPage JSON-LD. AI engines preferentially cite FAQ blocks because the question/answer pairing is explicit.

3. Cite specific numbers and benchmarks

Generative engines weight specific, sourced claims ("reply rates dropped 67% between 2023 and 2026") far higher than generic statements ("reply rates dropped a lot").

4. Mark up everything with schema

  • Article schema on blog posts
  • FAQPage schema on Q&A sections
  • Organization schema on the homepage
  • BreadcrumbList on deep pages

5. Write for plain-language entities

AI engines parse entities, not keywords. Use the canonical name of every concept ("account-based marketing" not "ABM" on first reference) and link related entities together.

How to measure AEO performance

  • Citation rate in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude for target queries
  • Branded mentions in AI Overviews
  • Referral traffic from generative engines (now a distinct UTM source)
  • Position-zero ranking in classical SERPs (still a strong AEO signal)

Questions on AEO

What is AEO?
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring web content so that generative AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews extract and cite it as the authoritative answer to a user's question.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for clicks from a ranked list of results. AEO optimizes for citation inside a generated answer. AEO builds on classical SEO foundations but adds requirements around lead-with-the-answer structure, FAQ schema, and entity-level clarity.
Why does AEO matter for agencies?
Over 40% of B2B research queries in 2026 are answered by AI engines before the user clicks any result. Agencies that aren't cited inside those answers become invisible to prospects in the research phase, regardless of their classical SEO ranking.
How quickly can an agency rank in AI Overviews?
Agencies that restructure existing high-authority content for AEO typically see citations in Perplexity and ChatGPT within 4–6 weeks, and Google AI Overviews citations within 8–12 weeks.
